CANDIDATE INSTRUCTIONS
You are a foundation doctor working in the emergency department. Phillip Thompson is a patient who has just been brought in by ambulance due to sudden onset chest pain associated with severe breathlessness. As part of your work up, perform a full respiratory examination on the patient. You are not required to take a history.
Perform a respiratory examination and report your findings.

Connective tissue diseases (Marfan’s syndrome)

Trauma (in tension pneumothorax)

Question 4: What is the anatomical landmark for needle thoracocentesis?
Answer 4: Second intercostal space in the midclavicular line (needle insertion should be on the superior border of the third rib to avoid injury to the nerves and blood vessels)
